2014 South Mainland Up Helly Aa
The 2014 SMUHA took place on Friday 14th March. Keith Lobban from Gulberwick was the Guizer Jarl and represented 'Einar
Eindridesson Thambarskelfir'. The Jarl's Squad comprised 34 members including 4 women and 5 bairns, along with 5
musicians.
The torchboys carried the Bill from Hillside road to the Gulberwick Hall in the early hours, where it remained on display
outside the Hall throughout the day. The Jarl's Squad also mustered at the Hall for breakfast and during the day they visited
the Anderson High School ASN Department in Lerwick, the Shetland Islands Council Housing Department in Lerwick and the
Sound Primary School in Lerwick. A march planned from Lower Hillside Road at Gulberwick to Gulberwick Hall was cancelled
due to poor weather (heavy rain & a NW gale) with the squad visiting the Bill at the Hall. This was followed by visits to the
Sandwick Junior High School and Cunningsburgh Primary School. After departing the Cunningsburgh School it was decided
to take the official 'Galley Photos' in the shelter of the old Cunningsburgh shop & garage as the weather had deteriorated
further to such an extent that the galley was being damaged by the wind as it was being taken around the schools. After this
the galley was taken back to the galley shed for repairs. The squad then went to the Sumburgh Hotel for lunch, after which
they visited the Dunrossness Primary School followed by the Overtonlea Care Home at Levenwick. They then departed for a
rest period at Levenwick Hall until the evening.
Fortunately the wind eased considerably during the early evening & the rain had died away by the evening muster at the
Lower Hillside Road, Gulberwick. The torchlit procession was from the Lower Hillside down to the beach at Gulberwick with
the Guizer ranks splitting at the south beach track junction with one rank continuing along & marching down to the beach via
the north track & the other rank performing a turning movement back towards Lower Hillside & then back down to the beach
via the south track. This meant both ranks entered the beach at the same time. The galley was was burnt floating on the sea
just off the beach although the mooring anchor had become buiried in the soft sand & the galley could not be pulled out as fas
as she could have been. A firework display followed the burning with the 25 squads comprising 515 Guizers then dispersing
to perform their acts at the Gulberwick Hall, Cunningsburgh Hall, Sandwick Social Club, Bigton Hall and the Ness Boating
Club. All the squads performed in all the halls until the early hours. The Bill Head was delivered by torchlight to the Guizer Jarl
by some of the Committee & Torchboys and the next 4 Guizer Jarls (each taking a corner of the Bill Head), at the Sandwick
Social Club in the early evening of the 15th March, followed by the Hop Night at the Cunningsburgh Hall.
