2013 SMUHA Evening Procession
and Burning of Sunnanhamar
The 2013 procession was along the Sandwick to Hoswick road down to Hoswick beach. The muster area for guizers was at the
Sandwick Social Club. Of the 522 Guizers (inc fiddle-box carriers), around 420 were carrying torches. From 6:30pm torches
were issued to guizers at the Sandwick Social Club with guizers forming up along the road from the Club to the Central
crossroads. The galley Sunnanmamar was positioned at the Central crossroads.
At 7:20pm the Jarl's Squad marched up the ranks, accompanied by the Lerwick Brass Band. The light-up was at 7:30pm,
followed by the procession west to Hoswick beach where the galley was burnt floating on the sea. During the procession the
route was closed to traffic apart from emergency vehicles.
A firework display and a burning 'Islesburgh Eagle' at the head of the beach followed the galley burning with the 25 squads then
dispersing to perform their acts at the Gulberwick Hall, Cunningsburgh Hall, Sandwick Social Club, Bigton Hall and the Ness
Boating Club. All the squads performed in all the halls until the early hours.
