2013 South Mainland Up Helly Aa
The 2013 SMUHA took place on Friday 8th March. Dale Smith from Sandwick was the Guizer Jarl and represented Rognvald
"The Wise" Eysteinsson, Jarl of More. The Jarl's Squad comprised 43 members including 8 women and 4 bairns, along with 6
musicians.
The Jarl's Squad mustered at the Sandwick Social Club for breakfast in the early hours. During the day they visited the
Anderson High School ASN Department in Lerwick and the Sound Primary School in Lerwick, followed by the Cunningsburgh
Primary and Sandwick Junior High Schools. After departing the Sandwick Junior High School the Jarl's Squad marched to the
Sandwick Bake Shop where the Bill was on display. Half the squad then made a visit to the Laurence Odie Knitwear factory
at Hoswick (who made the musicians jumpers), before heading down to the Sumburgh Hotel and joining the rest of the squad
for official 'Galley Photos'. After lunch at the hotel they visited the Dunrossness Primary School followed by the Overtonlea
Care Home at Levenwick. The visits were all accompanied by the Galley apart from the Overtonlea Care Home.
The evening muster was at the Central Sandwick Crossroads with the torchlit procession heading west to Hoswick and down
to Hoswick beach where the galley was burnt floating on the sea. A firework display followed the burning with the 25 squads
comprising 522 Guizers (including fiddle-box carriers) then dispersing to perform their acts at the Gulberwick Hall,
Cunningsburgh Hall, Sandwick Social Club, Bigton Hall and the Ness Boating Club. All the squads performed in all the halls
until the early hours. The Bill Head was delivered by torchlight to the Guizer Jarl by some of the Committee & Torchboys and
the next 4 Guizer Jarls (each taking a corner of the Bill Head), at the Sandwick Social Club in the early evening of the 9th
March, followed by the Hop Night at the Cunningsburgh Hall.
