2012 South Mainland Up Helly Aa
The 2012 SMUHA took place on Friday 9th March. Kevin Adamson from Cunningsburgh was the Guizer Jarl and represented
Bjorn "Holdfast" Brynjolfson (Bjorn of Mousa). The Jarl's Squad comprised 38 members including 10 women and 1 bairn. The
Jarl's mother, Alison, was one of the squad members - the first time the mother of a Jarl has ever been in an Up Helly Aa
Squad.
The Jarl's Squad mustered at the Cunningsburgh Hall for breakfast in the early hours, where they were greeted by a power cut,
which thankfully did not last too long as the breakfasts would have been brief. During the day the Jarl's Squad visited the Sound
School in Lerwick, followed by the Sandwick Junior High and Cunningsburgh Primary Schools. After departing the
Cunningsburgh Primary School the Jarl's Squad marched to North Bridge Stores where the Bill was on display. The Jarl's Squad
then departed for official 'Galley Photos' at the Sumburgh Hotel where they also had lunch. In the afternoon they visited the
Dunrossness Primary School followed by the Overtonlea Care Home at Levenwick. The visits were all accompanied by the
Galley apart from the Overtonlea Care Home.
The evening muster was along the Cunningsburgh School access road with the torchlit procession south along the main road to
Mail beach where the galley was burnt floating on the sea just off the Sands of Mail. A firework display followed the burning with
the 25 squads comprising 504 Guizers then dispersing to perform their acts at the Gulberwick Hall, Cunningsburgh Hall,
Sandwick Social Club, Bigton Hall and the Ness Boating Club. All the squads performed in all the halls until the early hours.
The Bill Head was delivered by torchlight to the Guizer Jarl by the Torchboys and the next 4 Guizer Jarls (each taking a corner
of the Bill Head), at the Sandwick Social Club in the early evening of 10th March, followed by the Hop Night at the
Cunningsburgh Hall.
